Saturday, 26 October 2019, Office of International Affairs of UNISNU collaborated with the English Language Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Education Sciences holding International Public Lecture under the topic "Digital Literacy: Why it Matters?". This agenda was held at the Seminar room of Library Building UNISNU Jepara with the Keynote Speakers Jayne C. Lammers, Ph. D from Rochester University New York and Ibu Puji Astuti, Ph. D from Universitas Negeri Semarang.
Attended by 130 audiences from lecturers and students, this lecture was running smoothly and wisely.
Mrs. Puji Astuti, Ph. D., as the first speaker presented that literacy can be done anytime and anywhere. When we communicate with others by making use the technology is an example of the literacy process. At the end of the presentation, she gave a message and motivation to all the audiences by giving a proverb in Javanese reads "Urip iku Urup" (to live is to give contributions to others) which means that living people must have a value by giving contribution to others.
Still talking about the same topic, Dr. Lammers, said that it is important to recognize that literacy has always given citizens access to information that can be seen as both positive and negative, even long before we had internet access and handphones. Rather than focusing on fears and dangers that some attribute to technology, the digital literacies perspective she shared in her lecture, encourages us to see how technology connects learners to new possibilities and identities that can help our societies.
This agenda aims to provide the academic community having dialogue and discussion directly with the science experts. Since the power of technology and social media, today cannot be denied, that is why this topic seems important to be looked up in details by holding this kind of agenda. Especially for lecturers and students of English Education Department who have very close everyday activities regarding literacy using English language, as the language used in the public lecture.
