The second Webinar of Oxford University Press (OUP) facilitated by OIA had been conducted yesterday, 26th November 2019. The topic discussed was still the same as the previous meeting, about Global skills. However, this time discussion was scaled down into the more specific topic regarding the application of Global Skills in English Language Teaching (ELT).

In this webinar, the speaker gave practical advice for teaching global skills in the classroom under the title “Teaching Global Skills in the ELT Classroom”. The speaker was Nicky Hockly, the Director of Pedagogy of The Consultants-E, an online training, and development consultancy. In line with the topic, the participant was from English Language Education Department (PBI) Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teaching Sciences. There were 15 students were invited to the forum to learn about how to teach global skills in English language teaching Classroom which is arranged at Laboratory UPT Pusat Bahasa Unisnu Jepara.

The agenda was started at 3.00 – 4.30 pm. During the first one hour, the participants were watching and listening to the online class intensively, guided by the online course worksheet provided by OUP. Later on the rest 30 minutes, OIA invited them to analyze what they have taken in mind from the presentation as in the worksheet, and then, asked some of them to come to the front of classroom to give their ideas about the topic discussed. Here are five essential global skills in English language teaching which had been discussed together by the participants of this Webinar.

  • Creativity and critical thinking
  • Intercultural competence and citizenship
  • Emotional self-regulation and wellbeing
  • Digital literacies

There were also 5 key messages presented by the keynote speaker regarding this webinar topic, are: (1) Global skills are helpful for every students, (2) Global skills prepare students for lifelong learning, (3) Teaching global skills can be combined with teaching English, (4) Global skills can be assessed, (5) Teacher and schools can work together to become change agents.
